In the heart of the captivating rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the gales through the single tree on the peak were his only companions. Day in day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. However, here one morning, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
